Milwaukee recorded eight wins in nine tries Wednesday night to improve to a 17-3 record in the week-long meet that concludes with title fights Saturday night. St. Louis was next at 13-6. In the first fight of the night, Eric Morel of Milwaukee stopped Karoz Norman of St. Louis in the first round of a 106-pound fight.

Milwaukee's Kendall Gould beat another St. Louis boxer, winning a decision against Terry Davis at 147 pounds. Another St. Louis fighter, Radford Beasley beat the defending champion at 125 pounds, Guillermo Moreno of Southern California, on a decision. Chicago's David Diaz, the defending champion in the 139-pound division, won by decision over Bobby Lewis of Cincinnati.

Darnell Wilson of Indiana, the returning champion in the 156-pound division, beat Marquez Reed of Texas. Floyd Mayweather Jr. of Michigan, last year's champion in the 106-pound division, defeated Julian Stevens of the Rocky Mountain team in a 112-pound bout. Stevens' loss was one of five on the night for the Rocky Mountain team, which had entered the second round just two wins behind Milwaukee in the team race. The Southern California team, which won eight of 10 bouts in the first round, faltered Wednesday night, winning just three of seven fights, and falling well behind in the hunt for a team trophv.

SAN FRANCISCO Pro Bowl linebacker Ken Norton has left the Dallas Cowboys to accept a reported five-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers for $8 million. Norton, recovering from bicep surgery, made $565,000 last season. Meanwhile, The San Francisco Chronicle reported the 49ers offered backup quarterback Steve Bono a one-year deal for about $700,000 to $750,000.
